Grey Knights: Army In Progress

As a counterpoint to my Daemon army, here's my progress so far on my small Grey Knights and Inquisition force. It really is a small force, with the Grey Knights only offering a single squad of Terminators, a Librarian and a Dreadknight, but I have plans. A Strike Squad, two Purgation Squads, a Land Raider Crusader and a couple of Rhinos or Razorbacks will join these chaps in battle...

My nascent Grey Knights force in all their pomp.
Librarian Ignotus Ayesteran of the Order of the Golden Shield.

Justicar Xavier Otxoa leads the Terminator squad into battle

Brother Ziortza with a relic banner of the Order

Brother Ezkibel offers some supporting fire to the brotherhood

Inquisitor Mikhail Kharkiv and his motley retinue lead the way

They're an odd bunch, really...

Grey Knights: Strike Squad Brother

This isn't a completed squad yet, but rather a test model.  Given that the new Codex was released recently, however, I doubt that it will be very long before I get cracking on the rest of them.

A lot of people aren't particularly big fans of the Grey Knights.  Whilst I wasn't a *huge* fan of the way in which Mat Ward treated a lot of their fluff, I love their aesthetic: the over-the-top inscriptions and intricate detailing of even the most base troops. Lovely stuff.

Grey Knights: Brotherhood Banner

Ah, great!  The 7th Edition Grey Knights Codex comes out, and instantly makes this chap semi-defunct, in spite of the horrific amount of time I spent painting him.  Grrrrrreat.

The Grey Knight Terminators are deceptively time-consuming.  At first glance, you would think that the amount of silver that they are showing would mean an easy paintjob, but all of the minute details are what really chews up your schedule.

This banner, in particular, took an absolute age to complete, as - like with all flat pictures (2D ones), you have to paint up from a dark base, getting progressively lighter in layers.  The whole process started with fading the background of the banner up from yellow at its hellish base, underneath the broken rocks and coals, to the red of the top.  There was also the shading and lighting effects on the different parts of the 2D Grey Knight's armour. Not as easy as it might look. I was also able to pop some detail in the pages of the book held out by the Grey Knight for a bit of added fanciness.

Here's a bit of a work-in-progress shot. In truth, he was pretty much finished by this point.

Note that I used the red as a spot colour across the model, but a contrasting sapphire blue to pick out the eyes, to make them seem piercing.

Inquisition: Servitor #2

My second Servitor! This time with a Heavy Bolter. I wanted a multimelta, but of course the typical techmarine set allows for no such thing these days...

Still... Multimelta or no multimelta, I love these guys.

Inquisition: Ordo Xenos Inquisitor

Behold! My Ordo Xenos Inquisitor, launching into battle with his trusty servo-skull looming over his shoulder.

As with my Ordo Malleus, he's a bit Astartes-heavy, but that's (once again) because that was the range of bits that I had to work with.

I opted for a nice, bright colour scheme with this guy, though.  He's a fairly loud, brash character, and that's reflected in his fashion sense.

Inquisition: Inquisitorial Acolyte

The eagle-eyed among you may recognise this geezer as being from the old Stormtrooper kit - the metal Imperial Guard Kasrkin set. He's such a cool, hard-boiled model that I had to include him in my retinue somehow.

I used red as a spot colour on his carapace armour to tie him in with the rest of my retinue - the Psykers and Inquisitor both have flashes of red on them, as does my Servitor.

I really liked the Kasrkin models, and I was a bit sad to see them replaced by the Tempestus Scions, until I realised how awesome THEY were, too!

Inquisition: Ordo Malleus Inquisitor

Well, you've got to love an Inquisitor, haven't you?  If you don't, they'll no doubt burn you for heresy.  Here's my Ordo Malleus Inquisitor!  He's rather Astartes-esque, but that's allowed - the Inquisition come from all walks of life.  Plus, I only had Space Marine body parts free at the time, so that channels your focus, somewhat, I guess.

There are bits from the Grey Knights Strike Squad used here, as well as the Terminator set (for the book), the Dark Angels Veteran box set (a constant source of wonderful bits), and the head is from the fancy Librarian (you can see what I did with the rest of the body HERE).

An Inquisitor should always be laden-down with all manner of books, scrolls and accoutrements befitting a protector of the faith.

Including swords - plenty of swords!  In this case, Nemesis Force Falchions (which can double up as Force or Power Swords).

Always important, as well, to have some servo-skulls looming wherever possible.

And here he is with his burgeoning retinue - a Mystic and a bunch of Psykers!  Oh, and a Servitor, as well.  He'll probably get his own post at some point in the future...

Inquisition: Psykers

No prizes for guessing which kit contributed the most parts to this project - these are the Psyker brotherhood for my Inquisitorial Retinue.

I had quite a job finding enough Laspistols to go around, mind.  Thank heavens for the Cadian Command Squad sprues!

One slightly oversized arm, courtesy of the Catachan Jungle Fighters...

And who doesn't love a host of Servo-Skulls looming over your shoulder?

I think this guy was actually the most fun one to put together.

"Alas, poor Yarrick!" etc etc...

My burgeoning retinue continues to develop.  There will be more to add to this in time.  I don't know how much tabletop action they will see, but I really enjoy having them for fluff purposes.

Inquisition: Mystic

Until a few weeks ago, this guy would have been filed away under GREY KNIGHTS, but it's all change in that regard, I suppose! 'Touchstone', as he is known, is part of an Inquisitorial Warband to work with my Ordo Malleus Inquisitor.

I kitbashed him together using bits of the Necromancer model, the Empire Flagellants kit, the Grey Knights Strike Squad kit and a load of additional bits and bobs from the Space Marine Tactical Squad kit and the Devastator kit.

The overall effect (I hope) has been to create a shabby, wild-eyed character who flits between madness and effectiveness.
