Grey Knights: Brotherhood Banner

Ah, great!  The 7th Edition Grey Knights Codex comes out, and instantly makes this chap semi-defunct, in spite of the horrific amount of time I spent painting him.  Grrrrrreat.

The Grey Knight Terminators are deceptively time-consuming.  At first glance, you would think that the amount of silver that they are showing would mean an easy paintjob, but all of the minute details are what really chews up your schedule.

This banner, in particular, took an absolute age to complete, as - like with all flat pictures (2D ones), you have to paint up from a dark base, getting progressively lighter in layers.  The whole process started with fading the background of the banner up from yellow at its hellish base, underneath the broken rocks and coals, to the red of the top.  There was also the shading and lighting effects on the different parts of the 2D Grey Knight's armour. Not as easy as it might look. I was also able to pop some detail in the pages of the book held out by the Grey Knight for a bit of added fanciness.

Here's a bit of a work-in-progress shot. In truth, he was pretty much finished by this point.

Note that I used the red as a spot colour across the model, but a contrasting sapphire blue to pick out the eyes, to make them seem piercing.
